Time for more Fourth World posting that no one asked for! I've previously written about the Fourth World comics of the 1970s and the 1980s, so here are the 1990s:

New Gods (1995): I FOUND IT! I FOUND A GOOD NEW GODS COMIC THAT ISN'T BY JACK KIRBY!!!

Okay, so the art is 1995 in the worst way, but the first 11 issues (written by Rachel Pollack) are actually excellent? The problem with previous New Gods runs was that it's hard to write about a utopian world at any length, but writers tried to introduce conflict by having the people of New Genesis be shitty, which undercuts the whole...utopia thing. Pollack has the corruption come from outside, which makes all the difference.

Basically, Darkseid manages to invade the Source (God, essentially, but more of a place than an entity) in an attempt to conquer it, but Orion follows him, and, desperate to stop him, kills him. However, committing patricide within the heart of the Source corrupts it, causing natural disasters on Earth and making everyone on New Genesis go evil or crazy or both. Which was all part of Darkseid's plan (he regenerates himself out of Orion's flesh, which is both very gross and a total mic drop moment) but now the cosmos are in upheaval and that's bad for everyone.

The other thing this book does that most post-Kirby New Gods books don't manage to do is treat Orion like an actual goddamn hero. Yes, he is angry and violent and makes bad decisions driven by destructive impulses. But he also loves Highfather and Lightray and New Genesis deeply, and this book allows those things to be stronger in him than his rage, and I'm crying about it. HE IS ACTUALLY A GOOD PERSON HE'S JUST ALSO A VERY CRANKY ONE.

The last few issues are by John Byrne and the plot and tone diverge pretty sharply but that's a lead-in to a different series so I'll talk about that in a bit.

Mister Miracle (1996): The universe tends towards balance and so because New Gods (1995) was good, this comic sucks. It sort of fits into the same continuity (it takes place after Darkseid dies), and so everyone on New Genesis is kind of being an asshole. But a lot of it just doesn't make sense and isn't explained? Like, they want Scott to be the new Highfather, even though Highfather is totally around in the concurrent New Gods series, and also this is presented as just a thing that everyone knew would inevitably happen, which...no? Honestly, the things that happen in this comic are so bizarre and arbitrary - characters appearing out of nowhere, continuity errors, random and baffling changes to the lore - that I kept thinking they were going to reveal it was all a dream. Bad.

Jack Kirby's Fourth World: So in the last 4 issues of New Gods (1995), Bryne takes over and long story short, Apokalips and New Genesis are smooshed together into one planet split down the middle (and also Orion dies). This series picks up from there and also ties into the Genesis miniseries. Byrne's art is always great, but the stakes are so exhaustingly high (the planets are smooshed together! now they're separated! Orion's dead! now he's back! now Highfather's dead!) that I started feeling numb pretty quickly.

It also relies heavily on the whole "god" thing, which means way more religious themes than I'm particularly comfortable with. (And yes, Kirby also drew very heavily one biblical themes but more for worldbuilding. He didn't have everyone on Earth "lose faith" because of issues with Source, as if atheists are just fooling themselves.) I just don't need that much Thor and Odin in my Fourth World comics, and the two of them repeatedly saying that they are "the closest to the Old Gods" is way too literal. (A commonly accepted version of events is that one of Kirby's biggest frustrations with Marvel was not being able to write a Ragnarok story and kill off Thor and his supporting cast, which is why he came to DC...where he immediately opened his book about NEW gods with the words "There came a time when the old gods died!" and a clear depiction of Ragnarok. This fan theory has several holes in it, not least of which is that Kirby did draw a Ragnarok story for Marvel, but the aggressively obvious allusion here just feels like Byrne is elbowing me in the ribs going "Get it? GET IT?")

Also, there are weird changes to the lore. I've mentioned before that in Mister Miracle #1, Scott is clearly already familiar with Earth, meaning some time has passed between his escape from Apokalips and our first sight of him...but Kirby has him living on Earth for two hundred years before Mister Miracle #1, including marrying a woman who isn't Barda - as if the idea that Scott and Barda had spent that long apart or that it took Barda that long to decide to leave Apokalips makes any sense at all. Tigra, Orion's mom, spends issues and issues claiming Orion is the result of a one night stand she had with some guy and thus not Darkseid's kid, and nobody really believes her but it's never actually resolved. Also, Infinity Man turns out to be Darkseid's brother??? What the hell.

This series also has a lot of Takion, a real Original Character Do Not Steal of a guy if ever there was one. He's Paul Kupperberg's OC, not Byrne's, but he shows up and is sparkly and more powerful than everyone and can talk to the Source and all the other characters ask him for advice all the time even though he literally just showed up and Beautiful Dreamer is in love with him and then he becomes the new Highfather. Big Mary Sue energy. Also he looks like a ripoff of Waverider, who is already firmly in Original Character Do Not Steal territory.

Anyway the series ends with Apokalips and New Genesis gearing up for a final, major clash...and then the last issue is literally just Byrne retelling a mashup of Forever People #1 and Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #147, but setting them in the post-Crisis universe instead of their original pre-Crisis framework. And then it's over. What? What???

Seeing discussions around headcanons in the Milgram fandom is such a mixed bag. Especially when the conversation turns to mischaracterization, flanderization, and how out of character a headcanon may be.

Becuase I'm just here like this is the fandom that thinks characters into existence and out of existence while calling it theory.

Just fucking appreciate this is being called a headcanon and not being treated as canon.

Like I'd love to sit around and be like,

"Hey, isn't it a bit of a stretch to separate a character into neat little tropes for one's own personal convenience and entertainment?"

"These characters wouldn't be that nice to each other in canon."

And I definitely love going to the three alter theory, something that is presented as fact,

"That character just actually doesn't exist in canon. This is a wild fanonization and bastardization of how this disorder works that focuses on a vocal minority of those who have it. This interpretation is rooted in so much projection that I think people will be personally offended if it's shown to be incorrect or left 'unconfirmed'. Because they literally threw a fit at the implication, it was wrong previously and doubled down. At that point, it's just a headcanon and preferred way to interpret the events laid out to us. I don't argue subjective truths if they're having fun, good for them."

Because honestly when something is presented as a headcanon who the fuck is it hurting?

Not me, I can tell anyone that for certain. Why the fuck should I care? It's not my head it's not my canon.

Something being labeled as a headcanon isn't presenting itself as the facts of the situation. It's not claiming to be a good faith unbiased reading of the media. Even if it was presented as that I know on a core level, some people can just be wrong or can't be bothered to read even if they say they are reading.

People can wind up cherry-picking information, having too much personal investment in the situation, or certain interpretation to remain neutral. Sometimes, I'm like that. At the end of the day we're all only human and fans of this media. There's no exactly right way to be a fan of a media and what that looks like will vary from person to person.

Now some may think,

All that really matters is if that person is having fun with the piece of fiction that they are a fan of. Fiction is here for the personal entertainment of the one viewing it. If a certain way of viewing the work is entertaining to someone else, then more power to them.

"Well, that's just your personal feelings on the matter. Yet, if their headcanon doesn't align with canon then they're just flanderizing the characters. This is dismissive of all the work the author put in to create such an enriching world brimming with great characterization. Plus it's unfair to people who really like and accept the character as they are."

Firstly, no one needs a justification to dislike someone else's headcanons or theories. We all have our own likes and dislikes. Not everything online is going to be tailor-made for every person. Free yourself from this commitment to giving takes you dislike that much energy.

Because from first hand experience no one in this fandom or any fandom really gives a fuck about what the source material is saying. Fans will make any stretch that allows them to get to their favored conclusion. Regardless of what canon or even the creator may say to contradict that conclusion.

A prime example of this in the Milgram fandom is the three alter theory. Something at this point people may think I'm being unnecessarily harsh on, but it truly is just a case of it being the most blatant example of the point I'm trying to make.

Because Deco literally one of the creators of this series came on mic and said there were two Mikoto's and look where we still are,

Please don't let people pretend they're canon compliant and unbiased now. Because Mikoto is a great example of that being false. It didn't matter how many times this was spelled out to the fandom or blatantly said.

From the second trial CD cover,

Right back to one of the people who created and worked on it spelling it out for everyone to see.

Some individuals disliked the writer's statement on this matter so much they started to push forth the idea that the creator was autistic and just didn't know. All in order to support their interpretation of the text. Even though she had just stated it was not her intent to write an autistic coded character and whether she herself is autistic does not change that lack of intent.

Here's an example not related to Milgram as well. Recently, the creator of Dungeon Meshi was asked if she intentionally wrote Laois as autistic. She stated that she hadn't written him with that intent. Needless to say, some people were not happy with that answer. Because it ruined their headcanon of the character and directly contradicted their interpretation of the text.

So, let's not play games this isn't just a Milgram fandom issue.

Everyone is capable of taking things too far in this regard no matter what fandom they're in.

People can take their interpretations of media way too far at times regardless of the media itself. What's happening with Ryoko Kui isn't new. I've personally heard people speculating about if Deco or Yamanaka have dissociative identity disorder along with other diagnoses simply based on the things they create. People have speculated about creators based on what they create so often there's a whole game about it,

The Beginner's Guide (made by the same guy that made The Stanely Parable)

This is something that has been going on since long before even I was born. That's how common this is and exactly why I find it interesting to note where some people's suspension of disbelief rigidly ends. What breaks the immersion. How willing people are to assume about another human being but downright hostile to the idea that people would have opinions on a piece of media that don't alogn with their own.

What's a viewers line? The thing that will be too much for them. That one facet that will make them go no this is too out of character for me. Regardless of if the information is coming from another fan or the creator themselves.

"Well actually Yuno says in her second voice drama that,

To keep on our main example,

To some assuming/theorizing there are more alters in Mikoto's case despite what has been publicly stated is fine because in their subjective opinion it adds more nuance and is truer to life. However, the same person may respond to someone else headcanoning Yuno and Kotoko as friends poorly with a response like this,

"Really? If you ask me, Kotoko is someone I would never want to make my friend, though. She's the type to pick a conclusion from the very beginning and won't actually talk with you."

So, they'd never be friends. The canon has made that super clear. Did you even watch the source material. Clearly not. It's just too much of a stretch and it's breaking my immersion... I mean she'd never be friends with her she said so herself! It is that simple! The source material spelled it out- Jeez, does anyone even care about canon as much as I do?"

Again I'm only using Yuno and Kotoko as an example because it's an easy reach. It can be any completely platonic, mundane headcanon, that has no impact on the source material and causes no harm to anyone.

To use another example the theory that Futa was becoming wrapped up in Amane's religion. Despite having an abundance of canon foreshadowing as evidence it was treated more as a silly headcanon. It was pushed against and viewed as just a silly leap of logic comparable to that of headcanon with no basis in the source material. Except on top of that some people were very consistently harrassed for presenting this as a possibility at all.

Meanwhile dudes who aren't joining cults be like (this is sarcasm and being used to again highlight how little canon matters to people),

It’s not something that should waver just because other people said something. Futa: I understand even less of what you’re saying than I did before.

Futa: Hah? Who the hell says that sort of thing about themself. ……ah, no, well, right now I understand a bit. When you’re feeling down, it’s nice to have someone who relies on you and accepts you. The rest of us can’t really understand you from where we’re standing. But well, if you’re Haruka’s “salvation” then I guess it really is great.

Mu: Salvation……? I don’t know what you mean. Futa-kun, you don’t sound like yourself. Did you hit your head or something? Oh, wait, you actually did, didn’t you. Ahaha. Ah, putting that aside though, did you know it’s my birthday today?

Amane: Happy birthday. Mahiru-san. How is your body feeling?

Mahiru: ……ah, Amane-chan. Thank you. Yeah, I’m fine. Now I can move around if I use a wheelchair…… It’s all thanks to Shidou-san looking after me……

Amane: I’ll give you one warning. The two of you are dabbling in something tabooed. If you continue to go against the way of nature like this, you’ll just bring an early death upon yourself. Think hard about this.

Mahiru: Amane-chan……? Are you really Amane-chan……?

Futa-kun, you don’t sound like yourself.

Futa: ––Hey, are you really ok with this? If you come with me, there’s a chance you can be saved too…… Haruka.

Haruka: Yeah…… I’ve made my mind up. I have, something, that I have to do.

Futa: Ah, is that right…… Haruka, you know, you’re an idiot. There’s no way…… that will save you……

Haruka: Yeah, thank you. I’m glad you came to talk to me, Futa. Um, thank you, for being so kind. Really. But, I’m sorry. This is all I’m able to do……

I believe all this shows that it really doesn't matter if the way one chooses to interpret the media complies with what's stated within canon or suppirted by the people who made it. At least from my perspective it's never really seemed to matter that much to the people grandstanding as though it does. I'm a rigidly canon compliant person, especially when it comes to analysis and fan works. Still even I just come up with stuff for fun sometimes that's only natural. I do this while fully understanding it won't ever be canon and I'm fine with it not being canon. Some things can just be for me and me alone.

Now I personally believe being canon compliant is fun because it shows a person ways to break canon if they want to. I'm the type of person who reread the source material to write fan fiction or goes out of their way to get a light novel just for the purpose of better understanding tge characterization. Because that's how I personally enjoy myself.

However, I've recognized from personal experience that's not how many people enjoy themselves. Based on those experiences I can say fandom spaces are generally a do as I say not as I do type of area when it comes to discussions around canon. Where the only take away can be sometimes it matters sometimes it doesn't. Yet when boiled down to it- This is just another bias where people can say I can see it because I like it then go it can't be that because I don't like that.

This isn't always a bad thing either as long as it's not taken to some extreme like assuming the diagnoses and experiences of the people who wrote the thing.

For me it's easier to come to that conclusion and not put so much attention on the sometimes brash opinions of others when I just go,

Outside of doing that this is just how people engage with media generally. Yes, from my perspective it seems as though some believe canon only exists when they need it to dismiss interpretations they personally don't like and support the ones they do. Yet from someone else's perspective that would just be them having fun and taking their interests seriously. I would be taking things too seriously and in bad faith by looking into that more deeply. Because no one has the right to tell someone else how they should enjoy things.

It's fine for people to have preferences in how they engage with things or choose not to engage with them.

"No one cares about canon. Outside of using it as an excuse to prop up what they like and bash what they don't canon does not matter."

I feel this is a fair conclusion to come to based on my personal experiences with fandom generally. In instances I've been told the writer of the thing wrote it wrong, canon should be ignored, this is why death of the author exists,

Canon and the authorial intent doesn't matter especially when it contradicts the things that the person viewing the work wants to believe. It's no longer about what the work is saying but about what one thinks it's saying. Despite both of these things being important to having a clear understanding of what one is being presented with.

Someone can write a paper starting with,

"I believe everyone should be happy and able to pursue their dreams."

But if you find out the intent behind that paper a few paragraphs in is supporting segregation the author's intent begins to really matter.

Like if a few sentences in the paper goes,

"This is why I believe we should respect the publics stated preference to keep our schools segregated. So, that everyone can get the appropriate and safest education."

The intent ceases to be ignorable in that instance. However, not everyone is just going to go on the record and say that. Not everything is always going to present itself in such an overtly bias way. This is why knowing the authors intent and beliefs can only give readers a better understanding of what they may possibly be internalizing.

A better example of this is the Harry Potter book series. Death of the author doesn't change who wrote that series. It just gives people the right to interpret the series however they want. Death of the Author says go headcanon! Go ham if you want to take the unambiguous sexism, classism, antisemitism, and racism out of this book franchise in order to allow yourself to take away a positive lesson from it then do that if that's what's helpful to you. Hell, do that with every book you ever read if you see fit. Once it's published it's out of the authors hands you can do anything with it.

Yet that doesn't stop those implications from existing in the framework of the text or other people who read the same thing from wanting to unpack and discuss those implications. Or even just discuss the shortcomings of the author themselves.

Death of the author does allow people to dissociate the author, their background, and intent from the text they've written. Yet, that's not a good thing because those biases that are sometimes deeply intrenched in bigotry will still remain in the text and may go unquestioned by the people reading it.

When a book describes a black child as looking adult for their age Death of the Author goes don't question why the writer may have said that and the biases this may imply. Just know this black child being described looks like an adult. This is a reference to a real description of a black thirteen year old I read in a children's book by the way. Like black children and children of color are generally described as looking mature for their age in not only fiction but in the news.

However, Death of the Author would tell you that background information isn't that important for understanding what you've been presented with. That you can just take the story as it is without needing any outside information. Death of the author leaves it to the one viewing the works at that time to either go oh I guess black children just look adult for their age or hey I don't look twenty at twelve or thirteen what the fuck.

Something that is completely subjective to the viewers proximity to the thing being discussed.

Yet, knowing the authors background would give context to descriptive choices such as these when it comes to describing black and other people of color in their work. Especially if it's a consistent pattern in said work. Death of the author says fuck that interpret the page however you want if you think certain sorts of children look older than they are or adult for their age take it as it is if not question it a little.

I don't believe I have to explain how this mindset exacerbates many of the arguments surrounding media in this day and age. I feel like this one is very self-explanatory. This is why while not difficult to separate a work from it's author it is irresponsible to do so. Simply because those are the people who made it. They shaped and created it without them the thing quite simply would not exist for better or worse and their biases can be seen throughout it.

Do you have to know every detail about the creator of everything you ever watch, read, or enjoy? No. Yet when the intent is told to the audience over and over if one cares about canon then they should at least take the intent into consideration as well. Because authorial intent shapes the canon. To those who believe that canon matters that much which I truly believe is no one but if there are people who seriously do-

Then look at canon analyze it, ask questions about it- Ask things like why would the author frame it this way, or say x here. People shouldn't just reach for canon when they need to kick down someone else's headcanon in order to feel validated in their own interpretation of the work.

Especially when in cases where the shoe is on the other foot and canon doesn't support our own beliefs we all have a habit of going some variation of,

"Well the author and the text did say x but this is my personal headcanon and how I like to the view it."

"I mean authors can be wrong sometimes too guys. Death of the author and all that. The writer just fumbled my interpretation is way better. Check out my fix it fic."

"I mean I like it still but they just did my fave so dirty. It's like people can't just write [insert sort of person here] well anymore."

Yet when it's someone else's headcanon this sort of talk suddenly becomes-

"Why can't the fandom stop flanderizing [insert character here]."

"Why does everyone treat [insert character here] as ignorant and naïve?"

"Why does everyone have this hyperviolent interpretation of [insert brown character here] regardless of how kind they're presented being in canon?"

Okay now I'm just putting very unsubtle jabs at fandom interpretations I've seen and personally disliked. Try to guess the fandom? Spoiler alert you can't because this behavior is simply that common.

Or to get back on track-

"This headcanon friendship and this au scenario are so out of character."

Man I wonder why it's like these are headcanons or something? Things that aren't trying to present themselves as fact but instead are creating a scenario where someone else's favorite characters can interact with each other. Because that person may not feel they get enough of that in canon.

It's not an in depth character study or a analysis of the series as a whole with cited instances of these characters saying, "Hey you're not that bad actually. I think we could be friends."

Unlike whatever the fuck was going on with Mikoto where they created a new guy and then consistently ignored authorial intent wherever it was contradictory to that guys existence. That was actually presented as fact and what the author was intending by some which is kind of different from going this is my headcanon. Plus given my continued wretched experiences with Mikoto's fans I feel like I have every right to be petty about this.

This is me being petty I could take this part out but no that was bullshit. What I had to go through in fandom in general was bullshit. How people have treated people for interpreting things differently from them is bullshit. The only thing it can come off as is entitlement plain and simple. So, yeah to me discussions around that were a stretch but a headcanon is a headcanon.

It's not presenting itself as a fact and it can be so easily ignored. No one needs evidence to make one because it's not a theory. It's in the name. It's a canon the person viewing the thing has made up in their own head. Headcanons do not and have never had to be canon compliant. These are something completely independent from canon.

But what about the three alter theory you just dragged aren't those people just having fun too- That is a theory being presented as fact- Widely so. Despite everything implying or downright stating it is not the case. Nothing can hurt that idea because it's the idea people want to be true. They'll keep believing it because it's helpful to their personal enjoyment. Which I guess at that point makes it fall under being a headcanon but it hasn't been presented as such.

Even still I've made it clear on numerous occasions that I have no issue with people who just like this interpretation for their personal enjoyment. Outside of the one instance of me being overtly petty the only reason I brought that up in this case was because I was trying to highlight how little canon and authorial intent matters and it happened to the best example of that.

Yet outside of this situation I rarely think of this concept unless it is brought up to me. Personally I wouldn't say this is a bad thing to believe or tell people to stop believing it. Unless they're treating dissociative identity disorder like a monolith and saying it can only present one way. However, if that's not happening I don't tend to care because how other people enjoy themselves and the things they like is their business.

If viewing it that way makes someone else happy then I'm happy for them.

The point of this post is literally just me going it's fine to believe what you want especially if it enhances your enjoyment of the media. Yet, respecting that other people have the right to believe whatever they want too is just as important. Like don't be hypocrite about it.

Plus it's far easier to just say I don't like this headcanon or when the relationshio between these characters are explored in this way without labeling the thing being discussed as contradictory to canon.

We all know it's a headcanon, it's an exploration of characters, it's not canon compliant. It's in the name.

"Buh-but, Gunsli some people might only see fanon and thinks that's the characters canon relationship or how the character is in general."

However, I'm certain that to many others how I interpret canon is fanon and I've got no doubt that to some people the views other fans hold are just fanon as well. I can't help just thinking of this whenever I hear someone complaining about another person's interpretation being to out of character or a stretch,

Oh, I know. I have first hand experience with that from the three alter theory. People will see that theory parroted over and over in theory videos, art, analysis etc and think this character exists. So, welcome to my reality.

See something in fanon you don't like- Just ignore it. Let the people have their fun. It's not that big of a deal or if it's really so bothersome do what fans have been doing for years and make some here's why x fandom reads x character wrong content. Because chances are if the interpretation provided annoys yiu it does annoys someone else. Yet there is no reason.to just tell someone having fun that you think they're wrong. Even though it's tempting and people can be really wrong.

Because in Milgram we seriously don't have enough information about these characters to say that this is the case.

Even when I make complaints like that (such as this post) it just feels like,

I have too much self-awareness to not go well if this isn't the pot calling the kettle black. Like come on it's fucking funny! This is the interpretation show what the fuck else am I supposed to feel other than how runny this is. Certainly, it doesn't feel that good when it's an idea one doesn't agree with themselves. I know trust me I know. Yet it doesn't feel much better when someone is just openly being an ass about your genuine interests either.

Even when some person feels that what the other is saying is so obviously not canon that they view it as diminishing to the narrative and the characterization it provides. It's not a fun feeling to have characters you like flanderized but it's not fun to have the characterization you like to view a character under labeled as fladerization either. This is a lose-lose situation where the only real solution is to try to be kind to one another.

Because at the end of the day if no one is being hurt by someone else's interpretation, if someone isn't spreading misinformation, or diminishing the lived experiences of others then just let them have their fun.

This is just how fandom works. People are free to believe whatever they want regardless of what the text says. If I wanted to fucking I don't know say that the guy Kotoko jumped and Mikoto were friends. I could do that I'm well within my right and I wouldn't have to explain why. I can just headcanon them as college classmates now. Fuck it they're around the same age.

Be free from canon. That is why headcanons exist. If you're not writing an analysis or theory fuck being canon compliant. Hell some people aren't canon compliant even when they're writing stuff that one would hope people were being faithful and aware of the canon while writing.

I like canon. I find joy in dissecting canon and seeing how it ticks. That is enjoyable to me. Yet some people can just write theories solely because they would like something to be the case then cherry pick around the point they want to make. No one is immune to bias and I don't think I am.

Do it make that headcanon. No one here can stop you. Because no one in this fandom has any high ground. None whatsoever. Not even me. I make it abundantly clear that I'm bias and if I'm not writing an in depth theory I'm not adhering to canon as rigidly.

I try to separate my biases from what I write but I do have them. I'm not infallible even theory to an extension is a form of fan work that can be riddled with bias and drenched in justifications. Still it's important to let others have their own opinions and space to express them.

Again unless they are blatantly spreading misinformation or bigotry that's harmful to others I really can't stress this enough. This is not what any of the things listed here do on their own that's something individuals choose to do completely outside of these things. At their core these interpretations are all just others ways for people to enjoy the thing they care about.

It’s become a more common understanding that governments, institutions, and algorithms will manipulate the public with what information they frame as fact, fiction, or worthy of attention. Though I am early in researching this topic, I've only come across a minimal amount of mainstream discourse on how the initial threat limiting our scope of knowledge is a refusal to listen to ourselves.

In a world faced with so many threats - humans being violent toward each other, toward animals, toward the earth - it can be a bit unsettling to release the reins and allow ourselves to bear witness for a moment, as we slowly develop a deeper awareness of surrounding phenomena and happenings.

divine knowing includes works by formally trained and self-taught artists. A majority of the artists are bisexual, non-binary, or transgender. Regardless of degree-status, gender, or sexuality, these artists have tapped into the autonomous well of self-knowing. Their artworks speak to tactics for opening up to a more perceptive mode of being. They unravel dependencies on external sources for knowledge and what we might recognize, connect with, or achieve once we do.

Like how you don't have to tell the heart to beat or the lungs to breathe - thinking goes away and I can get so close to my knowing that I become it. I love how art allows me to access my love for ambiguity, interpretation, and an interpretation that feels closer to Truth. I find no greater purpose than guiding people back to safety and reconnecting them with themselves. The most important thing to ever happen in my life was when I stopped trying to deny my reality - listening to your intuition can be like a freefall - no one but you can ever know or tell you - it is a deep trust without any outside proof.”

Energy Flux

It was especially noticeable around 20:00, which is not only when I typically schedule writing these journals, but is also when I stop eating for the day. Once my carb-intake was cut off, it didn’t take long for me to become really tired, and it took about an hour for my body to recuperate from it. I often see the tiredness associated with vegetarian diets being blamed on the fiber, but I really think its the carbs that have more to do with it—though, the fiber weighing down the digestive system might still have some impact.

Overall, based on personal experience, I’d say that low-carb/keto diets really are on the right track when it comes to optimal performance for the human body. The main problem is that, regardless of the source, proteins and fats tend to be really expensive, and I seem to need more than I have access to to stay in ketosis without also losing too much weight. On a later day she pointed out some other jeans she was wearing and said that I could wear them, too. I think she’s kind of getting how I’d prefer women’s stuff? I wish I could just get past my anxiety and talk to her more earnestly about it instead of trying to guess at these things.

If she is coming more around to the idea, it probably wouldn’t be too wild of an idea to her to buy me women’s shoes—they could even be tennis/running shoes, and I’d still be happier to have them from the women’s section. Another thing that’s occurred to me is that Mom probably has a purse or two sitting around that she doesn’t use that she could let me have. Having a purse would help with my gender presentation while also being superior to trying to stuff things into pockets. I actually hate how uncomfortable having things in my pockets can be.

Since my mind’s been on the topic, I thought of a step that might be small enough for me to show up on video for the online transgender support group. I just remembered while writing this post that there’s an option to “hide self-view,” which means I could turn on this laptop’s webcam without having to see myself. I still have no idea what the quality of this camera is or how bad the lighting of my room is, but I think not having to see it would help. I don’t have to commit to using the mic nor do I have to commit to making myself look good. I could just turn on the video feed and try to remind myself that I can trust everyone else to be fine with whatever it looks like.

I still haven’t quite caught up to where I had saved in Night in the Woods, but at least I made progress today. I can try to get there tomorrow; if not then, Thursday will work and I’ll just have to be fine with not getting to any dreams—or discussion of Demon Tower.

Speaking of tomorrow, I’m expecting to talk a bit about NaNoWriMo. I could also bring up how I struggled with being very distracted lately. I’m not really looking forward to telling the person who recommended that I apply to Publix that I didn’t actually do so yet; I just feel like it’ll disappoint her, even if I explain that it’s something that makes me anxious (and also that I did go into the store, but they don’t do in-store applications anymore.)

Oh yeah, last night I mentioned maybe going to Facebook to change my profile picture there to some sort of trans-pride image—in order to make up the habit-free time—but that didn’t happen. It was recommended to me to use something called “Sangled” though, so I might look into that whenever I actually do try doing something with Facebook again.

“Romeo Squad is ten hours away,” the man repeated, just as bleakly as before.

You took a deep breath and tried to calm your thoughts, but it was a lost cause. You ripped the comm from your ear again and shoved it in your pocket. “Shit fuck son of a damn bitch.” You weren’t going to make it eight hours. Hell, you’d be lucky if you stayed alive for the next ten minutes if the sounds outside were anything to go by.

Actually, now that you thought about it, the gunfire outside had calmed down quite a bit and you hadn’t heard an explosion in at least a minute. Fuck, you were so caught up in talking to Saturn Base that you hadn’t paid enough attention to the goings on around you.

You strained your badly-damaged ears in an attempt to discern how many were in the house with you and approximately where they were.

But they were moving too quietly for you to hear clearly. Only the occasional creak of a floorboard or the half-destroyed ceiling gave anything away and the house was so close to falling apart even that might have just been the wind or the house itself.

“I’m so fucking dead,” you breathed. You sent a fervent prayer out to anything and everything. You didn’t want to die in the middle of this forsaken desert. You gripped your rifle and pointed it at the doorway. If you were going down you were at least going to take as many with you as you could. They wouldn’t take you alive.

“Well you are a dramatic one, aren’t you?”

Your head swiveled to the right, following the source of the noise, and nearly screamed in surprise. Where there had been only air and dust a second ago now sat a young man in a blue pea coat and dark burgundy pants. An old rifle was strapped to his back and his russet boots looked old and well-used, though they were clearly well taken care of.

You scrambled away only for his hand to shoot out and drag you back to where you’d been before.

A spray of bullets sped past your face, close enough that you could feel the disturbed air against your cheeks.

“I suggest staying right there,” he said with a smirk. “You’re quite thoroughly surrounded.”

“Who the fuck are you?” you asked, staring wide-eyed at the man.

He frowned at that and tilted his head to the side. “Would you believe me if I said I was your guardian angel?” he asked. His ice blue eyes bored into you as though he could see right through you. For your part, you certainly felt like you were being x-rayed.

“While you certainly look the part I think it’s more likely I’m having a psychotic break,” you said, wide-eyed and frowning at the man.

He chuckled. It was a deep, chest-rumbling laugh that, were you not in a life-or-death situation, would have turned you into a pile of goo. “Sorry, Doll. No psychotic break today. Just little ol’ me. I heard your plea and decided to show up to see what all the fuss was about. Gotta say, you’ve gotten yourself into quite the pickle here,” he said easily, as though you’d gotten a flat tire instead of being surrounded by a small army of angry, hostile combatants with automatic rifles and missile launchers.

“What a time to get fucking hallucinations,” you mumbled bitterly.

“I’m not a hallucination,” the man said calmly.

“Then what the fuck are you?” you hissed, making the mistake of taking your eyes off the door.

Two men suddenly darkened the doorway, assault rifles pointed directly at your face. You didn’t even have time to point your gun at them before they pulled the triggers. You flinched, even though you knew it’d be over faster than you could process. You’d be a red splatter on the wall in an instant.

Except the impact never came. Or maybe it did and you were already dead?

That would explain why it was so quiet.

“Open your eyes.”

You did as the voice said, only because your curiosity had gotten the better of you. You blinked once, then twice, just to be sure your eyes were, in fact, open.

The room was unnaturally dark, but a few things stood out among the inky blackness.

One, there was a wall of bullets headed straight for you, though they seemed to be frozen midair. How, you couldn’t be sure. That wasn’t how the laws of physics worked.

Two, the two hostiles were frozen in place, as well. They weren’t even breathing.

Three, the man was the only other thing moving.

Four, the man was not a man at all. He was standing now, though you hadn’t seen him move. Inky black tendrils seeped from his back, encasing the room in darkness. Grey-blue spots the same color as his eyes glittered in the darkness like stars in the night. It was like the night sky had been trapped in the room. It was almost beautiful... if the entire experience wasn’t so bizarre.

“I have a proposition for you,” the not-man said, turning his eyes on you. With a shock you realized the whites of his eyes had turned the same black as the tendrils attached to him, making the blue even brighter and more stunning than before.

“What the hell are you,” you breathed, staring up at him in a mix of awe and horror.

He frowned and crossed his arms. “That’s kinda rude, y’know,” he groused. “Here I am, offering you the deal of a lifetime, and you go and insult me.”

You narrowed your eyes at him. “You have tentacles. Coming out of your back.”

He glanced behind himself lazily and one of them draped itself over his shoulder, then scratched thoughtfully at his chin, almost like a hand would. “S’pose that’s true. Here’s the thing, though, Dollface. What I’m offering you is a one time deal. Take it and I’ll give you the power you need to get out of here. Hell, once this whole fiasco is over, you could really change the war. The world, if you’re feeling all grandiose. You’d be the perfect soldier, the perfect human, at least physically. Can’t change anything in that lovely noggin of yours, that’s against the rules. Something tells me I don’t gotta worry about that, though. You seem smart. Decline and I’ll start time again. I’m nice, though, so I’ll move you a few feet to the side. Give you a fighting chance and all that, though there are sixty-two more guys just like these two close by.”

You stared at him shrewdly. “And what’ll that cost me?” Nothing in this world was free, especially not some great cosmic power this being seemed to be offering.

The not-man paused picking at his nail and looked down at you. His smile turned melancholy and he lowered himself slowly until he was squatting directly in front of you. His tentacles undulated slowly behind him, creating a dark ever-shifting backdrop that contrasted wildly to his bright eyes and pale skin. “Why, Dollface, it’ll cost you everything.”

alright, it’s a bit past midnight so I should get writing. today was pretty good. I woke up to my alarm at 10:30 which gave me half an hour to make myself presentable from the waist up at least for my Skype interview, lol, which wasn’t too difficult to get done. The interview went pretty well, it was fairly informal because they’re basically a company that gets projects from law firms that are outsourcing and they can submit our resumes for projects and see if we get selected. Most of them are fairly short term but would be a solid work day, and it would be on location in the loop which I think is probably a good thing because even if I had work to do on my laptop I still think being in my apartment alone all day would drive me nuts. So that’s looking positive, he said compensation differs per project but the unlicensed stuff is generally $22-$25 an hour while some of the licensed work (which I could do if it was available) would be more in the $30′s, so that’s good. Didn’t last all that long, but it was good. From there I kinda bummed around a bit before getting ready and heading out to my haircut appointment. It’s been a lot better than the freezing temps from last week, but it was still like 32 today so not exactly warm. I decided my best option to get there was to walk a bit to a bus that goes right by the Ulta, so I did that. I arrived a few minutes early so I browsed the products for a few before heading back to their salon area. I always love seeing my salon person because she’s super great and we always have a great time talking while she's doing my hair, and we had lots to catch up on since I hadn’t been there since July (since I’ve kinda been letting my hair grow out). Today was basically just to make all of it more even because it was a good deal longer in the back than in the front, so we got it more into a traditional bob cut which is generally my preferred hair length so I’m pleased with that. Once we were done I went back to viewing their products because I had a few things written down that I was looking for, so I picked up a concealer from them that’s supposed to be really good and a bottle of lotion because I’m almost out of the stuff the allergist told me to get. So I checked out there, then walked down to the Sephora down the street, because one of the things I was looking for was Sephora brand, so I couldn’t just get it at Ulta. I was looking at eyeliner options and such at Ulta but decided to hold off till I get to Sephora. So once I got there I found the lip stain pencils I had been looking for (I can’t like, do anything lip color that has any scent whatsoever because my body hates me so I can basically only use lip stains) then talked to some employees a bit about finding a black eyeliner that wouldn’t kind of smear down my face as the day goes on and a mascara that was a bit less clumpy than the one I was using. I felt bad because I was coming in and complaining about what were basically their top of the line products (I had been using urban decay eyeliner and better than sex waterproof mascara) but they just kinda laughed at that and said it was really fine, the better than sex mascara is their top seller but if you asked any of the employees in the store for the best one, they probably wouldn’t pick that. But they got me hooked up with some good options that I was able to test (sanitarily, thankfully, they seem to have that down) so I got those along with the two lip stains, and picked up a tiny bottle of hand lotion to keep in my purse from the check out line. Once I was done there I had to walk a bit over to where the nearest Sally’s location is, which happened to be closer to my old job than I thought it was (I could see the building from the front of the store) so I was kinda 😑 about that but oh well. I was looking for the same bleach kit I got there back in like, 2015, the last time I had lightened some streaks in my hair, and after some consultation with the employees I found it fairly easily and got that. At this point it was threatening to ice storm starting within an hour or so, which meant if I took the red line home by the time I would have to make my 20 minute walk home there’s a fair chance I could get stuck walking through an ice storm, which I would definitely like to avoid, so I went ahead and got an $8 uber pool which worked out nicely. There were two other pool people, one of which was loudly on her phone for pretty much all of it, and once she got off the driver started laughing and telling us everything that was going on before we got in the car and it was pretty funny. the uber app again attempted to drop me in the middle of the street where I’d have to jaywalk across a fairly busy road to get home, but I was paying attention to the app and asked to just be dropped off at the corner before that, which they thankfully did, so I appreciated that (at this point I’m like, should I like write to uber about this?? because it’s definitely a safety hazard, like I’d probably be fine but if it’s doing this to other people they could end up in a very bad situation, but idk if it would actually make a difference, sigh). Got home and unpacked all my stuff before going to the couch with my laptop where I finished the rest of the episode about crazy cool homes I had been watching on netflix before switching over to whatever the news was saying and just leaving it on there for a bit. Jess wasn’t planning on coming over because it was supposed to ice storm. but apparently it never actually did....so she came over and we ordered sushi/Japanese food (because we’re literally always on the same page about food lol. She hasn’t been keeping up with The Flash but was two weeks behind on Arrow so we watched last week’s episode before watching last night’s episode which we missed. It was a rather peculiar episode I would say, I don’t know how I feel about the whole documentary format, I didn’t really feel like it added much to the plot (thought I did appreciate seeing at least 30 seconds of my girl Sara on the screen). The plot with William was kinda weird, then of course there was the flash forward at the end regarding the documentary and someone named “Connor” (as in Connor Hawke) which would make a lot more sense as a timeline that it would reasonably be John Diggle Jr. than it did when he supposedly showed up in 2046 and was definitely not pushing 40. Once we finished that we were kinda meh about anything else we had to pay too much attention to because Jess was writing and I had been trying to figure out how to get my podcast mic to work since the other pieces came in today, but unfortunately I’ve been entirely unsuccessful so far, I ordered another piece that some online sources said will solve the problem, so I’m hoping that will work, because I’m pretty much lost as to how to get it to work. So for these reasons we turned on netflix’s Sabrina show which we’ve been casually watching without putting too much commitment into, so we finished the last episode we were on then got about halfway through the next one before the blu ray player started wigging out and not working, so at that point Jess headed home and I switched over to live tv, just in time for the democratic response to the SOTU address, which I was very intentionally not tuning into, but I thought the response was pretty damn good, especially compared to the one the democrats gave after president douche’s last televised speech. From there it led onto news which I let play for a little bit before starting to get ready for bed and hopping in the shower, and now I am here. I am quite tired at this point since I did get to bed awfully late last night and didn’t sleep in all that much, so I would very much like to be asleep as soon as possible, so I’m gonna do that now. Interview: Terrence Nance on AN OVERSIMPLIFICATION OF HER BEAUTY

(note: this interview was conducted for I-D in 2013; they failed to compensate me for it and then took it offline for some reason, so I figured I’d repost here in honor of Nance’s new HBO series RANDOM ACTS OF FLYNESS, made in collaboration with Darius Clarke Monroe, Nuotama Bodomo, Naima Ramos-Chapman, Jamund Washington and Mariama Diallo. enjoy - SM, 08.07.18)

The first astonishing thing about AN OVERSIMPLIFICATION is that it exists. The second, after talking with filmmaker/star Terence Nance, is how meticulously constructed it is. Produced by Jay-Z, dream hampton, Wyatt Cenac and Joy Bryant, OVERSIMPLIFICATION is some kind of somersault, a shapeshifting essay film (think Chris Marker, or EXTREME PRIVATE EROS) on director/ artist Terence Nance’s undying love for a woman named Namik. It sees him – and her – entangled with his feelings across film formats, years and continents, spanning hand-drawn animation, home video, psychoanalysis, therapeutic (or not) reenactments, CGI, stop-motion…. the works. If ever a film seemed improvised, it’s this one; Nance’s design isn’t just deliberate, it’s obsessive. The movie’s threads of narrative (and myriad narrators) drolly undercut themselves, just a blink of an eye before you get a chance to; even when xeroxing his memories into neat stacks, Nance hands the mic to Namik when you least expect it. Whenever Nance seems at risk of confession-cam wankery, he manages instead to tap a deep vein of psychological insight, toggling between gushing joy and a clear-eyed, bitterly adult remorse. As the velvet-throated narrator says early in Nance’s knockout debut, “a sweetness prevails.” How long have you been working on this? From the day I started it to today, it’s been six years. At one point I wanted it to be the ugliest movie ever made, like, a total piece of shit, shot exclusively on phones from 2005 or Beta Max news cameras. My director of photography talked me out of it. Some of those pieces are still in the final product, but we shot on the DVX100 (miniDV), DSLRs, shot a little bit on film, cell phone footage is in there, just, everything. I mean, I originally approached this as an artist, not as a director. I don’t know if you noticed but the first moment and the last moment are the same – the film was supposed to play on a loop, originally. You use a lot of ancient Egyptian imagery in the movie. Is there a hidden pattern to that, or is it just stuff you like, that you wanted to put in the movie? I grew up in a very African-centric household, so when I’m thinking about timeless images of space – not outer space, just space – I default to hieroglyphs, khematic imagery. I also fall back on art deco, which I think is very sourced in that. There’s a repeated motif, with this stop-motion puppet of yourself, stumbling – letting the girl see you stumble. Isn’t it a compliment if you let someone see you stumble? That’s about composure. I think a lot, specifically in my relationship with Namik, it kinda hinged on this strange dance in which I perceived her to be attracted to my ability to keep my composure around her. Between her and other women I fell in Love with, I noticed a trend, you don’t ever wanna be caught flippin’ out (laughs), or more specifically being needy, or coming from a place of emotional vulnerability. Stoicism makes you seem extremely composed – the whole movie is about that. That moment in the film is like, a microcosm of what’s going on. Actual composure vs. presentation. Exactly. The film is a document of having lost composure, you know what I mean? Within the context of the interaction I was having with Namik, I was still kind of hyperaware of that. In order to maintain whatever it was we had, I could not lose my composure. I had to come off as calm, cool and collected. It seems like a double whammy for you – this is a highly personal, flammable movie, and it’s also your big debut to the world… I think it is, but the movie seems much more personal than it really is. The amount of information actually disclosed about me is extremely limited. The film is personal but I viewed its execution the same as I would’ve viewed any other film about any other subject… I think, I always wondered subconsciously if the effort I was putting in warranted the scope of the final product. That was always difficult but what pushed me through is that I connected the film’s completion to my credibility as a human being. I told everyone I knew that I was working on it so if I never finished people would have thought of me as a flake. It was very strange, definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. I can’t imagine raising kids is tougher than making one’s first feature film. Nowadays it’s kind of commonly accepted that distribution, itself, is the final piece of the production process. It’s strange – I’m really against that assumption. On some level it’s obviously a sound assumption given the state of the industry, but including distribution in production hurts how prolific a filmmaker can be. Distribution diverts a whole shitload of energy from making art into getting the art in front of people. Presumably, there should be someone committed to doing that, for whom that is their expertise, but the nature of the economy is such that even if you have distribution, people on your production team, they still need the director to maintain momentum and energy throughout distribution, especially on small art films. That constant day to day involvement in distribution hurts the long-term proclivity of art filmmakers. So you’re pushing back against one set of precedents or another, even when the film is done. Well, at Q&As, people consistently respond in one way or another to the fact that the film tells the story of a not-so-explored masculine character – a young emotionally vulnerable Black male. There’s this socially aware / activist energy present in reading the film for any “activist” intent in exploring that under-explored archetype. I’m aware that you do not see that character often, but I made the film so Namik would fall in love with me, it was an impulsive decision to make the film at all. It had nothing to do with me raging agains the machine and showing Black males cry by any means necessary! So a very small sub-section of the critical response hasn’t been accurate to my headspace when making the film. It was for her, about her, about us. At the same time, at the end of the day, something like this has not come along in a while, and that’s a valuable discussion. Why aren’t there enough films about Black men who are emotionally vulnerable? Why isn’t that a popular image in films? etc. I’m glad that discussion is being had around my film. You mentioned you finished a script called THE LOBBYIST, which you’re now casting, and you mentioned wanting to start shooting while OVERSIMPLIFICATION was being released – kinda as a joke, to avoid the release. There’s a lot of energy you gotta put into releasing a feature film theatrically, and it makes you realize that what you really wanna do with your time is MAKE films. The energy and feedback I get from screening the film is great, but it’s very clear to me that I’m most at ease and in my element when I am at home making stuff, writing, drawing and singing, and no matter how much the world tries to revise what a filmmaker is to encapsulate the process of presenting and distributing the film, this process has really made me learn that, y’know, my purpose is to make things. So I’m really trying to get back into that energy aggressively and conscientiously. Most days, I can’t, I’m still in the middle of this release, and luckily this film’s success heavily influences and enables the next project. So… I can’t, like, slack off.

PS5 release date, specs, news and features for Sony’s PlayStation 5

The PS5 (or PlayStation 5) is the next-generation PlayStation, with a release date planned for late 2020. Although Sony has remained tight-lipped about its new console, it has drip-fed us a few juicy details on what we can expect from its next-gen offering, and we now know we'll finally hear about the PS5 games line-up on June 4.We've already had our first look at the DualSense PS5 controller, which boasts some impressive-sounding features such as haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and a built-in mic. But what is arguably most interesting about the DualSense controller is its radically different look and space-age black-and-white color scheme, which suggests the PS5 design will look something similar – and will be a big departure from its predecessors.Just as important as the DualSense Controller are the PS5 specs discussed at Sony's March reveal event. Lead system architect Mark Cerny provided us with a deep dive into the PS5's system architecture, revealing the technical inner workings of the PS5. We'll cover them in more detail down below, but for now know that the PS5 is rocking an AMD Zen 2-based CPU with 8 cores at 3.5GHz, 16GB of GDDR6 memory and a custom RDNA 2 AMD GPU that puts out 10.28 TFLOPs of processing power.In terms of features, we know the next-gen console will have ray-tracing, a super-fast SSD, a built-in 4K Blu-ray player and will be backwards compatible with a huge swathe of the PS4's game catalogue. Fans will be able to watch via Twitch, YouTube or the official PS5 website. We've been expecting that Sony will host another PS5 reveal event sometime in the near future, but we weren't quite sure when. In a corporate strategy meeting earlier this month, Sony president and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida stated that we will be seeing the "compelling" PS5 games line-up "soon", leaving many to speculate about a potential PS5 games reveal event date.Bloomberg recently reported that a PS5 reveal event was planned for June 3, but did add the caveat that plans could change, given the current circumstances.While VentureBeat’s Jeff Grubb, who spoke to sources under the condition of anonymity, uncovered Sony's plans to host big PS5 showcase sometime in the first two weeks of June – suggesting a (what we now know to be correct) date of June 4. It seems this event will only focus on PS5 games, with Grubb claiming the showcase will include both first-party titles and third-party titles from Sony’s trusted partners. God of War (Image Credit: SIE)Sony has officially confirmed that the PS5 will release "in time for Holiday 2020", so likely some time between October and December 2020 - putting it in direct competition with the Xbox Series X, which is releasing in the same window. A leak has suggested that the release date will be November 20, 2020 but that's yet to be confirmed. However, this date would be in the right window, as we're predicting the PS5 will release in November, 2020. November is historically when we've seen PlayStation's launch and it would leave time before Christmas to get those orders in. AMD, the tech giant that’s been commissioned to make the processor and graphics chips in both the PS5 and Xbox Series X next-gen consoles, is “ramping up production” to prepare for their respective launches, AMD CEO Dr Lisa Su confirmed in early May 2020. This timing too is also suggestive of a November launch window.Sony has frustrated some fans with the way it's drip fed information regarding the PS5. Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki seemingly isn't worried about the competition, though, and is confident the PS5 will beat the Xbox Series X in sales. Despite rumors, a Sony has confirmed the PS5's release date has not been delayed by Covid-19 so we should still see the next-gen console release in late 2020 - even if we're not sure exactly when that will be. We're expecting to find out the PlayStation 5's official release date in the coming months, having not been revealed at the March 18 technical talk. Death StrandingSony hasn't officially confirmed a PS5 price yet and, last we heard, that's because it hasn't actually decided how much the next-gen console will cost.In a quarterly earnings call (via Spiel Times) back in February, Sony's chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki revealed the company still hasn't nailed down the PS5 price."What is not very clear or visible is because we are competing in the space, so it’s very difficult to discuss anything about the price at this point of time, and depending upon the price level, we may have to determine the promotion that we are going to deploy and how much costs we are prepared to pay," Totoki explained.“It’s a balancing act it’s very difficult to say anything concrete at this point of time," Totoki said. But we do know that Sony is aiming for "the best balance so that we will be profitable in the life, during the life of this product."However, Sony Interactive Entertainment's president and CEO Jim Ryan has hinted that a PS5 price tag may be closer to being decided and that the PS5 might not have the 'lowest price' in battle against Xbox Series XIn a wide-ranging interview with GamesIndustryBiz, Ryan addressed speculation around the PS5 cost. While not revealing the price, Ryan suggested the PS5 price could be a significant hit on gamers' savings, and certainly not committing to beating the Xbox Series X on price.Speaking on whether the potential for a Covid-19-related recession will affect sales of the PS5, a high-value gadget, Ryan said:"I think the best way that we can address this is by providing the best possible value proposition that we can. I don't necessarily mean lowest price. Value is a combination of many things. In our area it means games, it means number of games, depth of games, breadth of games, quality of games, price of games... all of these things and how they avail themselves of the feature set of the platform."While Sony may not have confirmed a price yet, there have been rumors about how much the PS5 could cost. On August 26, C.K. made a surprise appearance at New York’s Comedy Cellar, where he performed a 15-minute set to a standing ovation. It was C.K.’s first high-profile public performance since last November, when he admitted to having masturbated in front of multiple unwilling women.

For C.K.’s supporters, his performance was a welcome return to the fold, coming after C.K. had admitted his wrong and spent time out of the public eye. He’d taken his medicine, was the general argument, and now it was time for the public to let him come back to comedy as a changed man.

“Will take heat for this, but people have to be allowed to serve their time and move on with their lives,” wrote actor Michael Ian Black, in a tweet he later apologized for. “I don’t know if it’s been long enough, or his career will recover, or if people will have him back, but I’m happy to see him try.”

“[Louis C.K.] can be shamed, humiliated, lose millions of dollars, lose all of his projects, lose the respect of a lot of his fans and peers, and whatever else that comes with what he did, but since he can still do a comedy set for free at a 200 seat club a year later, it means he got off easy,” wrote SNL’s Michael Che in a series of now-deleted Instagram posts. “THAT’s how coveted fame is.”

In Louis C.K.’s initial apology for his history of sexual misconduct last fall, he acknowledged that part of what made his actions wrong was that he had created a power dynamic in which women couldn’t walk away from him.

“What I learned later in life, too late, is that when you have power over another person, asking them to look at your dick isn’t a question. It’s a predicament for them,” he said. “The power I had over these women is that they admired me. And I wielded that power irresponsibly.”

But C.K.’s surprise set at the Comedy Cellar ended up recreating the same toxic power dynamic.

C.K.’s set was unannounced, and even the Comedy Cellar’s owner didn’t know he would be appearing. (Reportedly, C.K. walked up to the emcee and asked if he could have the mic for a bit.) Any members of the audience who did not feel comfortable watching C.K. perform and lending him their de facto support had no warning about what was about to happen. They couldn’t choose to stay home, because they didn’t know what they were about to watch.

And once C.K. took the stage, anyone who was uncomfortable with his set couldn’t necessarily just get up and walk out. The Comedy Cellar has and enforces a two-drink minimum, meaning that you have to spend a certain amount of money at the bar before you can settle your tab and go. Until you’ve reached your minimum, you’re stuck.

Women who were present at the set told Vulture that they weren’t pleased C.K. was there, but they felt uncomfortable speaking out against him. “If someone had heckled him, I think they would’ve been heckled out. It felt like there were a lot of aggressive men in the audience and very quiet women,” one said. “It’s the kind of vibe that doesn’t allow for a dissenting voice. You’re just expected to be a good audience member. You’re considered a bad sport if you speak out.”

So, to recap: Louis C.K. fell from grace after admitting that he had masturbated in front of women without their meaningful consent. He made his big attempt at a comeback by entering — without warning — a space whose rules discourage walkouts and whose culture discourages heckling. The irony is not lost on the women who ended up witnessing his set. “It felt like he was being thrust upon the audience without telling them,” one said to Vulture.

C.K. did not just disappear for nine months as punishment for his sins. The career ramifications he suffered — getting dropped by Netflix, HBO, and FX; his movie getting shelved — came partly because his brand was toxic, but also as part of a workplace safety issue.

C.K. disappeared because he had demonstrated a pattern of predatory behavior around women over whom he had power, and he did it in their place of work. (Reportedly, he asked some women to watch him masturbate but didn’t even ask others; the women who said that he asked first have explained that C.K. had so much power over them that they felt they couldn’t say no.)

In most industries, if an employee is fired for sexually harassing his underlings, it’s considered poor form to rehire said employee nine months later just because he has shown up and requested his job back. You need assurance of some kind that he has taken steps to correct his behavior, understand what he did wrong, and prevent himself from harassing people again. You need proof that demonstrates that you aren’t putting people in danger by letting this person back into the workplace.

In C.K.’s apology, he wrote, “I have spent my long and lucky career talking and saying anything that I want. I will now step back and take a long time to listen.” Even if you were to set aside the fact that C.K.’s definition of “a long time” is apparently nine months, he has yet to demonstrate that he has put in the necessary work to assure us all that he isn’t going to harass women again when given the chance. If anything, his willingness to spring his presence on an unsuspecting and potentially unconsenting audience suggests the opposite.

There is a common theme to all of the instances of sexual harassment that C.K. committed: He consistently targeted young up-and-coming comedians who did not have his level of institutional power. He harassed them and made them feel unsafe in professional spaces, and that negatively impacted their careers. And when they came forward about what he’d done to them, their careers suffered more.

“Since speaking out, I’ve experienced vicious and swift backlash from women and men, in and out of the comedy community,” wrote C.K. accuser Rebecca Corry in a Vulture article in May. “I’ve received death threats, been berated, judged, ridiculed, dismissed, shamed, and attacked.”

None of the women whom C.K. targeted have the institutional power to walk into the Comedy Cellar on the spur of the moment, grab the mic, and be met with a standing ovation. And C.K. does not appear to have used any of his own enormous institutional power to raise the platforms of these women. Instead, he’s stood by and stayed quiet while they are harassed for having come forward to speak publicly about what he did to them.

Here’s the situation we’re left with: Louis C.K. has not done anything that we know of to make up for his actions and the way they negatively affected his victims. He has not done anything that we know of to show that he even understands the extent to which his actions negatively affected his victims. He has not done anything that we know of to assure us that he won’t sexually harass women again in the future.

Instead, he showed up to a venue that customers can’t just walk out of and inflicted his presence on the audience with no warning. He recreated the power dynamics that made him dangerous to begin with. And he did it all in a bid to convince the public to accept him back into their good graces.

But if his standing ovation at the Comedy Cellar is any indication, no matter how many people have their doubts about C.K., he will always have plenty of vocal and enthusiastic supporters ready to cheer him on.
